Days after advancing to the second round of
the presidential election in France, nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen
said she was in favor of outlawing kosher slaughter.
"I am sorry, but I believe special labels
should be used in cases where there is slaughter without stunning," Le
Pen said, referring to Muslim halal and Jewish ritual slaughter, which
is carried out while the animal is conscious.
"I think such slaughter should be banned. I think that 90% of slaughterhouses are halal in and around Paris," she said.
Le Pen, who until this week was the head of
the far-right National Front party, has previously said that she was in
favor of banning the wearing of Jewish kippot and Muslim head scarves in
public.
Her rival in the May 7 runoff, centrist
candidate Emmanuel Macron, toured the area west of Paris on Tuesday. He
told his supporters he was "proud to have defeated Le Pen" in the first
round but warned against complacency. Macron appears to have
consolidated support from both mainstream parties, Les Republicains and
Parti Socialiste, and is the clear favorite to win the runoff.
Some 80% of French voters say they believe he will beat
Le Pen, and a new poll conducted by Opinionway shows he is expected to
get 61% of the vote to Le Pen's 39. But Macron, 39, is worried that his
commanding lead would convince his voters not to show up at the polls
and told the French media that "the race is far from over."
